Our Staff

Meet the friendly staff at Sturgeon Animal Hospital!

  • Dr. Rory Wiens, DVM, DABVP (Canine and Feline Practice)
    Veterinarian/Owner

Dr. Wiens completed 3 years of a Bachelor of Science in Genetics before being accepted into the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (Class of 2004). After graduating, he worked at a busy 24-hour emergency hospital in Calgary and then completed an internship in medicine and surgery.

His fascination with ocular surgery and medicine took him to Las Vegas, where he attained an internship in ophthalmology. He grew homesick though, so returned to Alberta in June of 2007 and has lived in St. Albert ever since. He purchased Sturgeon Animal Hospital in March of 2012. In 2018 Dr. Wiens became board certified in Canine and Feline Practice, making Sturgeon Animal Hospital one of the few small animal practices in Alberta at which board certified specialists perform general veterinary medicine. Dr. Wiens is very happy to be practicing in the community that he loves, and lives with his wife Lorna, son, daughter, and two energetic dogs.

  • Dr. Jessica Miller, DVM
    Veterinarian

Dr. Miller completed 3 years of Animal Science at the University of Saskatchewan before entry to WCVM, graduating in 2005. She then spent 11 years working at a busy multidoctor practice in Edmonton. From there she found herself at a rural practice which offered a better balance. Dr. Miller worked there for 2.5 years before getting the opportunity to join our team, this also allowed her to be closer to home.

Dr. Miller enjoys spending time with her clients and is a great fit to our growing practice. She and her fiancé live in St. Albert with their two young sons and two cats.

  • Dr. Joel Watts, DVM
    Veterinarian

Dr. Watts graduated as honorary valedictorian in 2019 from Saskatchewan. After working with cattle, horses, and pigs, he finally found his passion in dog and cat medicine. He loves the challenges and client interactions of general practice.

Many facets of veterinary medicine interest Joel, including general animal wellness, internal medicine, ophthalmology, dentistry, dermatology, and much more, making him a great addition to the team!

Joel was raised in St. Albert and doesn't plan on leaving! He loves exploring places for a good dog walk, but also enjoys staying in with friends and good movies (and he's taking movie suggestions!). Joel shares his home with Timmy (his laid back tortoise), Marvin (his cool cat), and Bea (his troublemaker dog).

  • Dr. Amanda McMillan, DVM
    Veterinarian

Dr. Amanda McMillan was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She first started working as a Veterinary Assistant in a small animal practice back in 2010 while completing her Bachelor of Science at The University of Winnipeg.

She received diverse experiences with all types of animals, and she was able to complete her final clinical year of Veterinary Medicine at The Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Since graduating Dr. Amanda McMillan has predominantly focused on caring for companion animals but is always looking to expand her clinical knowledge and experience.
